Hoffman & McNamara Nursery and Landscape has an immediate opening for a Controller. We are seeking an experienced, motivated financial professional looking to take ownership of a key leadership role within our growing company. Primary Job Summary:
We’re looking for a knowledgeable, organized, and proactive Controller to oversee the financial operations of Hoffman & McNamara. In this role, you’ll lead our accounting functions, support our accounting team, ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, oversee payroll and benefits administration, manage compliance requirements, and provide financial analysis to H&M leadership team. You’ll also serve as a key connection between H&M and our CPA, legal counsel, insurance agencies, bonding company, and benefits providers.

Compensation:
Salaried position: $110,000-$130,000 per year with annual performance bonus opportunity. After an onboarding period of 30 days, benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, HSA, PTO, and paid holidays. Eligible for profit sharing will be available after one completed year of service.

Work Hours:
Full-time Salaried position, 45 hours weekly with a flexible schedule year-round, with additional hours as needed during peak financial and reporting periods. During that time, the Controller should anticipate working closer to 50 hours weekly. These hours will be worked onsite at our Hastings location. Possibility for partial remote work after the onboarding period.

What You’ll Do

Lead and support our accounting operations.

  • Lead and Support the PR/AP/AR Specialist and Project Accountant to create a cohesive, high-performing accounting team.

  • Ensure financial processes are organized, accurate, and carried out on schedule.

  • Provide financial guidance and support to H&M leadership.

  • Support A/R process.

Own our financial reporting and close processes.

  • Direct the schedule, accuracy, and successful completion of month-end and year-end financial close.

  • Maintain Billings in Excess and Work-in-Progress (WIP) tracking.

  • Oversee inventory valuation and tax filings.

  • Provide proactive financial modeling, reporting, and analysis to H&M leadership.

Manage banking, payroll, and employee benefits.

  • Oversee and reconcile bank accounts, lines of credit, and rent/lease schedules.

  • Manage all aspects of payroll and payroll taxes.

  • Administer employee benefits, including profit sharing, health insurance, HSA, and fringe benefits.

  • Maintain accurate and timely reporting related to these programs.

Oversee insurance, bonding, and compliance.

  • Coordinate bonding and insurance programs, including renewals, claims, reporting, and payments.

  • Spearhead company-wide compliance efforts across legal, OSHA, EEO, and other regulatory requirements.

  • Help ensure H&M remains organized, prepared, and compliant as the company continues to grow.

Build strong outside partnerships.

  • Serve as H&M’s primary liaison with our CPA firm.

  • Maintain strong relationships with legal counsel, insurance agencies, bonding companies, and benefits providers.

  • Coordinate with outside partners to ensure H&M’s financial and compliance needs are handled effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or similar financial leadership role.

  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting, month-end/year-end close, payroll, and accounting processes.

  • Experience with Work-in-Progress (WIP) accounting and project-based financial reporting.

  • Experience managing employee benefits, insurance, bonding, or regulatory compliance.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel and financial software skills.

  • Construction, landscaping, contracting, or project-based accounting experience is a plus.
